Former Chairperson of the Nigeria Women Professional League (NWPL) Mrs. Dilichukwu Onyedinma says that the decision by Nigeria Football Federation
(NFF) to cancel the 2019/2020 Football season was hasty and unjust, reports NGNewsHub.com.
“I can’t really explain what is happening with Nigeria football, cancelling the entire football season because of the Covid-19 pandemic without making definite plans to see if the leagues can be restarted like some other African countries are trying to do,” Onyedinma said of the NFF’s decision.
“I think the decision was hasty. They [NFF] should have tarried for maybe until the end of July or August to see if the NCDC will give the go ahead to reopen sports. It didn’t go down well with some clubs, while others grudgingly accepted the league body’s PPG decision to end the league.”
She continued: “Our league should not be always about representation in CAF inter-club competitions, but also for development of the game and the players. Are we even sure the whirlwind called Coronavirus will be contained for CAF to play next year’s editions? And I don’t see the possibility of a new season starting in September/October because of the stringent safety measures NCDC have in place.”

On the women league, Chief Onyedinma who is the Acting Executive Secretary for Social Welfare in FCT said NFF should have made a pronouncement on who would represent Nigeria in the newly introduced CAF Women’s Champions League like they did with picking Kano Pillars to represent Nigeria in the CAF confederation Cup.
“The last year’s winner of the NWFL should have been announced as Nigeria’s flagbearers in the maiden edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League. I don’t see reasons why there should be playoffs after cancelling the season as I read in a publication recently,” Mrs Onyedinma who doubles as the Director of sports in the FCT concluded.
