Onuachu Leads Eagles Strikers In Europe Despite Poor Output For Nigeria

66

Genk forward, Paul Onuachu is currently Nigeria’s hottest striker in Europe in the 2020/2021 season, but the top form of the 26 year old at club level will not guarantee him a starting shirt in the Eagles lineup ahead of the forthcoming double-header AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone.

Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr named EIGHT ATTACKERS in his 24-man squad for the
games, now made up of four centre-forwards and four wingers, with Onuachu initially named among the players on standby replacing injured Moses Simon.

Interestingly, Onuachu is the most prolific of the lot having scored nine goals in 10 league appearances in the Belgian top flight. Despite his impressive feat however, Onuachu has struggled to replicate his club form in the national team leading to criticism in some quarters, while others put the blame on the Eagles’ inability to play to the striker’s
strengths.

It would be recalled that Rohr, in an interview preceeding the recent friendlies against Algeria and Tunisia, said Onuachu must adapt to the Eagles style rather than changing the team’s style to suit the striker.

However, with the return of Eagles’ arrowhead, Victor Osimhen, Onuachu will belimited to cameo roles despite the fact that the Napoli new striker is still trying to settle down in the Serie A where he has one goal to his credit after matchday-6.

Onuachu will also be vying for the central striker’s position directly with Kelechi Iheanacho and returning Emmanuel Dennis despite the duo also having just one goal to their
names this season for Leicester City and Club Brugge respectively.

Also posing an indirect competition for Onuachu are the likes of Everton’s Alex iwobi, Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze and clubless skipper, Ahmed Musa, who all have fewer club goals but better international pedigree than the Genk forward.

New sensation, Chidera Ejuke, with two goals for CSKA Moscow in the Russian topflight is expected to be the cynosure of all eyes rather than Onuachu in the games against Sierra Leone.
