During least six individuals were killed in a gun attack at the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) gubernatorial campaign event in Odata, Ihiala village, Anambra state.
The attack took place on Tuesday, October 12th, and it was learned that security personnel and the gunmen engaged in a gun fight.
Several others were also injured during the firefight at the local government region, which lasted over two hours.
Governor Willie Obiano’s vehicle was among those engulfed in the chaos, according to a source who spoke to The Nation.
According to the source:
“The Governor’s convoy was stopped for approximately an hour while gunfire rang out throughout the neighborhood.” The security personnel were the ones that attacked the convoy, not the convoy itself.
“During the gunfight, a number of security personnel were killed, as well as a number of attackers. We know there were more than six people slain.”
Ikenga Tochukwu, an Anambra police spokesman, has already confirmed the occurrence. Security officers recovered one AK 47 rifle, 30 rounds of ammunition, two magazines, and four cars, according to Ikenga, who added there were no police casualties.
According to a police spokeswoman,
“Anambra State Command Operatives successfully repelled an attack at Odata Central School, outside St Martins church Ihiala, at 9:30 a.m. on 12/10/21.
“One AK 47 rifle, two magazines with 30 rounds of ammo, a Lexus 350 jeep, a Rav-4 jeep, a Mercedes Benz, and a Toyota Corolla were among the items seized.
“A preliminary inquiry suggests that when the hoodlums arrived at Odata Central School, they began yelling sporadically.”
“However, security officers working with the police and military were able to successfully repel them.” There were no casualties reported to the police.
“In the meantime, normalcy has been restored in the neighborhood, and attempts to apprehend fleeing gang members with wounds are proceeding.”
Security operatives thwarted attacks at the venue of APGA’s campaign event for the November 6 gubernatorial election in Anambra State, according to C Don Adinuba, Anambra Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment.
The gunmen arrived on motorcycles and in three vehicles, according to Adinuba, including a Toyota Lexus 350 ES with registration number EKY 765 EX, a Toyota RAV4 with registration number JJJ 434FP, and a Ford van whose number could not be determined at the time of this report.
According to the commissioner,
“The gunmen, unable to fight the troops’ and police officers’ superior firepower, dashed inside the enormous facilities of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, which lies right across the street from the campaign grounds.
According to an eye witness who did not want his identity published in the media for fear of his safety, “they sustained significant injuries even though they managed to shoot a heroic soldier.”
“The security officers would have gunned them all down if the gunmen hadn’t rushed into the hospital, which is a very delicate location to shoot anyone.”
